Why Don’t Cats and Dogs Like the Same Tunes?

In the category of “only in America” (I HOPE!), I’ve come across CDs and DVDs for sale for dogs and cats “to minimize separation anxiety and destructive behaviors.”

CDs feature “an hour of music, stories, and sound effects.”  The DVDs feature “images and sounds specially chosen for cats and dogs.”  The consumer is encouraged to “play it all day with the auto-loop function.”  And of course the content is different for felines and canines — no chance they’ll spend the day on the couch together.

So if you stop by a friend’s house, see no cars in the driveway but have a sense that someone is in the house, don’t worry… it’s simply the cat listening to her favorite sounds: claws scratching the furniture, catnip production, milk being poured… or does your cat prefer Samba or Leave it to Beaver reruns?

If the dog leaves the room, hopefully he’ll hear the theme song for American Idol cueing up if he doesn’t want to miss an episode.  Or perhaps his DVD features fire hydrant installations or episodes of Clifford the Red Dog.

The composer for this series, a Yanni associate, “wrote this music for his own pets, and it worked.”  I’m wondering how one measures that.

And I’m wondering what is says about our priorities when we would spend about $22 (including shipping) to buy these products.

Something’s wrong when there are about half of the world’s people living with less than $2.50 per day and others of us (myself included) drink $4 coffees, buy CDs for our dogs to listen to while we work long days and drive SUVs.

I’ve found this site very useful;

http://www.globalissues.org/article/26/poverty-facts-and-stats#src1  (Global Issues: Social, Political, Economic and Environmental Issues That Affect Us All)…in beginning to think about the injustice of what I have and do — when others have no such access.  Honestly, I’ve made very few life changes… but I am committed to exploring what to do and how to do it.

Maybe our pets have some ideas on how to live more equitably — if that’s the content on their auto-looping DVDs.
