Christmas a la Elvis

Yes, I’m a Jesus girl.  I believe. I worship.  I know what the church calendar looks like, and I know the difference in advent and epiphany.

Yet many or most of my holiday traditions come straight from Graceland or Hollywood.  Maybe it was the way I was raised, or maybe I’m just comfortable with dichotomies… but I love the juxtaposition of sacred and secular, and I delight in both.

Of course a “Lessons and Carols” service is a great event for entering in to the Biblical narrative.  And the lighting of the purple candles on an advent wreath, with appropriate scriptural readings, is — of course — in tune with the “reason for the season.”

Yet as much as I enjoy those things, I also love me some “Blue Christmas,” delivered by secular, velvet Elvis.  It’s a different thing… not a substitute, but its own delight.

Christmas means dragging out my kitschy Christmas aprons bought on eBay, watching a marathon of Mary Kate and Ashley videos (don’t ask), decorating the tree with Vietnamese bandanas made for soccer fans (they’re red), creating a new food group (“corporate gifts”).

Thanksgiving wouldn’t be complete without an Alice’s Restaurant singalong (“It was two years ago on Thanksgiving,”… “I had never heard of a dump closed on Thanksgiving, and with tears in my eyes…”).

I love the coexistence of dignified and solemn with kitschy and glorious.  They’re both traditional!

What should I do for Valentines Day?
