If It Were My Home… Visualizing the Gulf Oil Spill

We generally have more concern and interest about things that hit close to home.  That’s why this site is so great; it helps you see the oil spill as if it were in your own part of the world.

What if we could do that with all crises and disasters… imagine them as happening to us or those we love.  How much more would we help?  How much longer would we keep our focus on that problem vs. moving on in a few days?

We are not a people of statistics; we relate to the familiar or to the unfamiliar if someone can make it familiar.  In an age of globalization, that’s an important role: familiarizing us with each other’s plights and joys, normalizing others’ lifestyles or challenges.
